On Friday, March 9, 2012, at 2:20-something am, I was awakened by a “voice” that spoke near my right ear. The “voice” simply said, “Pray.” I was asleep, at the time, and I have never before heard God speak audibly, so I am not sure if the “voice” was truly audible, but if it was not, it was the “loudest impression” I have EVER gotten from the Holy Spirit.
The “voice” was so gentle and so loving, but so authoritative that it commanded me to obey instantly without even thinking or delaying with any hesitation. I started praying as I threw the covers off of me and got out of bed as fast as I could. I continued praying as I dropped to my knees.
I was greatly surprised at my physical ability to get out of bed so quickly. Normally, every morning, due to physical pain and extreme fatigue and/or weakness, it takes me, sometimes, up to three hours to “get up.” Additionally, just a short while before I heard the “voice,” I was tossing and turning in bed due to much physical pain in many different parts of my body. That frustrated me because, when I went to bed, I was resting comfortably – well, as comfortably as I could with the many physical problems I have. Then, surprisingly, seemingly out of “nowhere,” a “stronger wave of sickness” seemed to come over me. That pain was, unfortunately, keeping me awake and very restless. I thought about getting up to take my narcotic pain pill, but I really hate taking that due to its addictive nature. I planned on riding it out. More pain...different areas...stronger pain. “Do I take my narcotic pain pill now?” I thought. I still chose to not take it. Sleep eluded me. I was frustrated. At one point, I even whispered that I'd been “set up.” I eventually went to sleep thinking I had been set up by the enemy. I had not been asleep very long when I heard the “voice.” I was set up by the enemy; however, that only positioned me to give a greater testimony to the strength I had to get up and obey the “voice” as He spoke, “Pray.”
I had no idea what I was supposed to be praying for or against, but I obeyed. I prayed...for and against everything that came to my mind to pray. At one point, while still on my knees, I said, “Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening.” But, I heard nothing in response. I “sensed” that I was just to trust and obey. A peace came over me, and I started praising God for whatever it was that He just did. It was mysterious, but wonderful.
I may never know the evil that was averted through my prayers, but I do sense, in the depths of my being as strongly as if I actually know, that “God did something wonderful” only in response to my prayers. God tells us in His Word, in Ezekiel 22:30, “I looked for someone to stand up for Me against all this, to repair the defenses of the city, to take a stand for Me and stand in the gap to protect this land so I wouldn't have to destroy it.” (MSG) May it never be said about us that He couldn't find one. It is ONLY by HIS grace and through HIS "voice" calling me that He found me! Remember, precious servant of the Lord, one day, we will hear that very same, loving, gentle voice say, "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!" (Matthew 25:21 NIV) What a joyous day that will be!
